Found Objects and Cold Connections (Aug 5-9)

A five-day exploration into combining found objects and metal without soldering.

We will use found objects in combination with semi-precious metals to create some unique and colorful earrings and pendants. Techniques such as tube rivets, solid rivets and tabs will be covered. Prior experience with a jeweler’s saw is helpful but we will cover the proper use of using a saw along with tips on quickly cutting multiples.

We will make earrings with ear wires and a post style earring without solder!

We will bring some patterns for earrings and pendants that you can work on and then by the fourth and fifth day we can assist you with your own ideas for creating a unique “to you” piece.

Techniques:

  • Tube rivets

  • Tabs

  • Solid rivets

  • Sawing/piercing

Student Supply List:

  • If you have a jeweler’s saw and metalsmithing tools, please feel free to bring them but if not don’t worry we will supply some tools.

  • Bring some found objects such as tin cans, game pieces, etc. that you’d like to play with and we will also bring a plethora of fun items to experiment with.

KIT FEE: $25 (payable to the instructor at class time)

  • Kit will include brass and copper sheet, copper and sterling tubing/wire, some found metals, saw blades, sterling ear posts, patterns.

Provided by Instructor:

We will bring several jewelers saws (in case you don’t have one) anvil, bench blocks, hammers, stamps, hole punch tools, drill and bits, tube cutting jigs, templates, shears, bench pins, sandpaper, files., etc.
